THE MONTESSORI RECIPE: SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH & IMPLEMENTATION FIDELITY
As Maria Montessori recognized, empirical research provides valuable information that must guide our decisions as educators. This keynote will present research findings relating to what we know about high fidelity Montessori implementation, and its relation to child outcomes. Dr. Angeline Lillard will include new findings and will share research covered in her upcoming book, The Montessori Difference: Considering the Evidence, Oxford University Press (2026).
She will be happy to field questions; come and mine Dr. Angeline Lillard's terrific knowledge of the scope of research in education, and in Montessori!

THE ROOTS OF TRUST: HOW EARLY YEARS SHAPE LIFELONG SECURITY
This session will explore how trust develops during the first three years of life and why it is foundational to a child's emotional and social well-being. Through consistent, sensitive, and responsive care, infants and toddlers form secure relationships that shape their sense of safety, self-worth, and connection to others. Drawing on insights from attachment theory, neuroscience, and Montessori pedagogy, we will examine the environments, interactions, and practices that support or undermine the development of trust.
Participants will reflect on the role of the adult in cultivating trust, consider the impact of early caregiving on long-term psychological and relational health, and discuss practical ways to foster trusting relationships within Montessori environments.

MONTESSORI MATHEMATICS: THE THREE PERIOD APPROACH
During this session, we will explore mathematical presentations in the 3-6 classroom, focusing on the Three Period Lesson and how to provide the keys to mathematical understanding.
Participants will examine how this teaching method supports children's natural progression through the sensitive period for mathematics, ensuring a solid foundation for future learning while respecting each child's individual pace and development.

MONTESSORI GEOMETRY: EXPLORING THE PATTERNS OF OUR LIVES
This session will delve into the richness of the geometry curriculum in the elementary Montessori classroom. We will explore both the sensorial and intellectual dimensions of geometry—from the concrete exploration of shapes through the geometric cabinet to the abstract reasoning of theorems and proofs. Participants will examine how geometric concepts are woven throughout the elementary curriculum, connecting to mathematics, nature, art, and culture.
We will discuss how geometry supports the reasoning mind of the second plane child, offering opportunities to classify, analyze, and discover patterns in the world around them. Through hands-on demonstrations and discussions, we'll revisit key materials and presentations, consider the role of nomenclature, and reflect on how to guide children's independent exploration and discovery.
Whether you're refining your understanding or seeking inspiration to reignite your geometry lessons, this session aims to deepen your appreciation for the elegance and precision of Montessori geometry and its profound relevance to children's lives.

THE UNTOLD HISTORY OF AMI IN THE US
Explore the historical development of Montessori education with a particular focus on the origins and evolution of training. We will trace Maria Montessori's early work beginning with the Casa dei Bambini, the establishment of international training courses, and the formalization of Montessori education through publications, standards, and the establishment of AMI.
This presentation situates Montessori's work within broader social, political, and historical contexts, including the impact of fascism in Europe, World War II, Montessori's exile and productive years in India, and the post-war reestablishment of training centers in Europe, particularly Bergamo. It also examines the spread of Montessori education across the globe - highlighting the history within the United States. Understand key figures, institutional developments, philosophical divergences (AMI and AMS), and the revival of Montessori in America in the mid-20th century.
Throughout, the presentation emphasizes lineage, gratitude, and professional inheritance, acknowledging teachers, trainers, and institutions that have shaped Montessori education across generations. As we look forward, we do so with the continuity of Montessori principles, the importance of fidelity to the child, and the responsibility of contemporary practitioners as inheritors and stewards of this global educational legacy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why the Montessori Advanced Studies Conference?
AMI-EAA is a grassroots and mission-based organization supporting AMI Elementary-trained teachers. It is managed by an all-volunteer board of six members. Our mission is to create a supportive and welcoming environment where AMI teachers can deepen and refresh the knowledge they gained during training. We aim to provide an opportunity for this vital work to be done in community with fellow diploma holders, guided by the wisdom and experience of an AMI trainer.
There has been a call for a return to offering an AMI-diploma course option at an annual conference. While EAA's focus remains specifically on AMI-trained elementary teachers, there is a recognized need and request for an AMI-diploma course option at the Primary and Assistants to Infancy levels as well. In the absence of an alumni association at those levels, and considering our history and infrastructure, we believe it is our responsibility to provide this experience at those levels too.
We fully acknowledge the importance of expanding our reach beyond diploma holders and educating the broader community about Montessori. However, we cannot forsake our core commitment to serve diploma holders. We support and promote events and education for non-diploma holders, such as the annual Montessori Experience, yet to preserve the integrity of AMI, we must maintain an annual opportunity to refresh our training.
We see our role as collaborating with AMI/USA and supporting their offering of the Montessori Experience. To facilitate this, we have chosen a nearby location during the same weekend. This allows an entire school to travel to San Diego together, share hotel accommodations, and for diploma holders to engage in deeper learning. It also provides administrators, assistants, and other community members a chance to participate in the many enriching offerings of the Montessori Experience.
We encourage all members and supporters of the AMI community to select the offerings that best meet their needs. Let us unite in our shared mission to support children and continue the rich legacy of the Association Montessori Internationale!
Why is AMI-EAA launching a parallel conference to The Montessori
Experience?
AMI-EAA has the sole purpose of supporting AMI trained teachers. It is run by an all-volunteer board of six members. It was AMI-EAA that created the refresher course to give elementary diploma holders an annual opportunity to revisit the depth and wisdom they gained in their AMI training. Later, AMI diploma holders at other levels requested to join this annual conference. Eventually, the conference became a co-sponsored event with AMI/USA.
While we recognize the need to grow our reach beyond diploma holders and to educate the larger community about Montessori, we cannot abandon our commitment and duty of serving diploma holders. We fully support and encourage events and education for non-diploma holders, however in order to maintain the integrity of AMI, we must retain an annual opportunity to refresh our training.
There has been a call for an AMI-diploma course option at an annual conference which not only allows for the deep-dive, advanced information that diploma holders find so valuable in their work, but also allows for camaraderie and community between attendees. While AMI-EAA's mission focuses solely on AMI trained teachers at the elementary level, there is a need and request for an AMI-diploma course option at an annual conference at the Primary and Assistants to Infancy levels as well. In the absence of an alumni association at the Primary and A to I levels, and given our history and infrastructure, we feel it is our duty to provide this experience at those levels as well.
Why is it happening at the same time as The Montessori
Experience?
The Montessori Experience (previously The Refresher Course) has become an annual event and tradition for many schools. It is a critical piece of the necessary continuing education for an entire school's staff. Schools have worked it into their budget to send teachers, assistants, and administrators to the conference each year.
If we offered an event for diploma holders at different dates and/or in a different location, schools could be forced to choose between them or would likely exceed their conference budgets if attending both. This way an entire school can still travel to San Diego together and even share hotel rooms, with diploma holders having an opportunity to take a deeper dive, and administrators, assistants and other community members having an opportunity to attend the many wonderful offerings of the Montessori Experience.
The decision to launch this conference came after extensive and thoughtful discussion within our board, with our membership and under the guidance of our pedagogical advisors.
